WE BARGE
We designed the office of Webarge, a Belgian shipping company, situated at KANAAL Wijnegem. This former industrial distillery has been converted by Axel Vervoordt into a dynamic mixed use site, with a strong focus on art. The cultural and residential community is located next to a crucial water way, called Albert Canal. The penthouse on the fifth floor was a blank canvas with 360 degree views and defining concrete formwork walls.

Webarge didn’t want a typical office layout given the industrial potential of the new location. These industrial qualities had to be paired up with a welcoming and playfull atmosphere. The steeldeck ceiling is covered with an acoustic sprayplaster, a good example of upgrading the industrial roughness of the space. We added new layers of texture that complement with these excisting qualities. Two particular elements are the wood flooring in enlarged checkerboard and the enamelled joinery. The round concrete kitchen island is the heart of the office. It doubles up for informal meetings, foodprep as well as five o'clock drinks.

This location is very suitable for the clients profile, as Webarge can literally see their bypassing boats on a daily basis. Therefore openness was key in our design approach, which we implemented by disconnecting new volumes from the ceiling and playing with heights. The prominent half height glass divider is one of these interventions. It’s materialisation was carefully chosen, as the glass bircks have a wavy pattern on one side. A small wink to the rippling water. In keeping with this design ethos all the other partitions are transparant.
