Mercurius
Mercurius is a minimal residence located in Antwerp, Belgium. What was once an industrial gateway has been reimagined, replaced by a light-friendly gate fashioned from plastic grilles encased in steel frames. The new installation respects privacy, adheres to the original yellow brickwork, and introduces light from the street side into the interior space.

A considerable segment of the industrial footprint was relinquished to establish an expansive terrace and an urban garden, thereby introducing an element of nature to the city setting. The terrace design is unique, seeming to ‘float’ towards the garden, while the exposed brick walls narrate the building’s layered history.

Ground floor renovations were guided by the existing grid structure, in line with the building’s utilitarian past. Sandblasted concrete beams, once hidden, now contribute significant aesthetic and structural value to the interior and the garden. Subsequent additions included a playroom and a utility area, inserted thoughtfully in relation to these defining beams.

The office space, formerly housing the site superintendent, was transformed into a functional home office. The project demonstrated a strategic approach to resource reuse at varying scales. Original factory lighting was revamped to meet modern standards, illuminating the kitchen area as a suspended centerpiece.

Preserving the art deco features of the original residential level added a touch of nostalgia. Archways from the former living space now serve as elegant partitions between the bedroom and dressing area. The recovered mosaic parquet flooring unifies the overall design, continuing from one room to the next. Other elements were retained via ‘inserts’, such as the solution for a shower and bath in the former dining room, honoring the building’s past while catering to the demands of contemporary living.
