The most striking element in this design concept is the 'floating' cooking countertop. Over a length of 5 metres, a steel structure was made, which is encased with amazakou veneer cabinets and a tiled worktop. The height under the cabinets is aligned with an existing blue stone plinth. The tiled worktop is composed of D-tile components, these determined the dimensions of the whole element. D-tile allows applications to be integrated, such as gas burners, supports for cookbooks, electric sockets, etc. The sink volume is in bluestone to match the existing skirting boards.

Before the renovation, the ground floor space consisted of a separate kitchen, with little natural light due to its central location in the building, and an adjacent dining room. Merging the two spaces increased the natural light as well as the kitchen size. A big advantage as the owners are gifted cooks and love to entertain. Additional interventions that enlarged the space are the new green floor as well as rerouting circulation. In the ‘darkest’ area of the space, we planned a pantry kitchen. The access to this part of the kitchen is framed with a amazakou round arch, in relation to recurring round detailing in the house. The pantry provides the kitchen with appliances, additional storage and access to the basement. Opposite the cooking volume, a wall unit has been elaborated to serve as a counter, storage and library for cookbooks.
